Stars on Earth

Well this post doesn’t have anything to do with the clothes out of my closet but rather a movie out of my movie collection. I recently put on the Hindi movie Taare Zameen Par (Stars on Earth) and just had to talk about it. I had seen this movie when it came out back in 2007 and I don’t think I connected with it the way I did now. As an individual who works closely with children this movie really strikes a chord with me. The uniqueness of children expressed in this movie is something that needs to be understood by all. Working with children, I come across so many different kinds of kids who are all special in their own ways. It is unfair to draw comparisons between children and what they should be achieving merely based on their age or other children. This movie beautifully articulates the different abilities children possess and how opportunities must be provided for them to express themselves and share their unique talents. Having worked with children who are slower learners, experience disorders like Asperger’s, Autism, ADHD, I have grown appreciative of the fact that children come with many different abilities. I am all set to start a practicum in September working with children and adolescents who experience a variety of disorders and social difficulties. Through this experience I am super excited to enhance this understanding of working with children of different abilities. I talk about this because I feel that often children are faced with many different pressures from parents, friends and even teachers. It is important to individualize learning and expectations for each individual child so that they have opportunities to succeed. People often tell me “oh anyone can teach” and sure, maybe standing in front of the classroom and delivering a lesson can be done by anyone but the ability to individualize and connect with each individual child is the challenge. Child or not take the time to get to know someone before developing an opinion; everyone is different and should be appreciated for their uniqueness.

If you haven’t watched this movie it is available on Youtube (with subtitles), I encourage you to check it out 🙂
